Updated October 2026. Dates and hours are for the 2026/27 season.
Short answer: Innsbruck has seven Christmas markets in 2026. The Old Town market at the Golden Roof and the Marktplatz market by the river open on 13 November and run to 23 December (daily 11:00–21:00). Maria-Theresien-Straße (from 25 Nov) and the Hungerburg (from 20 Nov) stay open until 6 January 2027.
Innsbruck is one of my favorite Christmas day trips to recommend, because so much fits into one day: an old town with a medieval feel, mountains right behind the rooftops, and several markets close together. It’s also just up the Inn valley from us. Here are the 2026 dates and hours for every market I could confirm, plus a one-day plan that gets you from the Golden Roof up to the Hungerburg and back in time for the lights.

The Old Town market at the Golden Roof
13 November – 23 December 2026, daily 11:00–21:00.
This is Innsbruck’s oldest and largest Christmas market, right in front of the Golden Roof (the Goldenes Dachl, a balcony covered in gilded copper tiles). It has about 65 stalls and a 20-meter tree. The highlight for me: every day at 17:00, tower musicians play from the Golden Roof. Plan to be in the square for it.
Marktplatz: the family market by the river
13 November – 23 December 2026, daily 11:00–21:00.
Down by the Inn River, with the colorful houses of the far bank behind it. This is the one I’d head to with kids: there’s a carousel, a puppet theater and a Swarovski crystal tree. It’s only a few minutes’ walk from the old town market.
Maria-Theresien-Straße: the modern one
25 November 2026 – 6 January 2027, daily 11:00–21:00.
On Innsbruck’s main shopping street, with food from around the world and the Nordkette mountains rising behind it. It opens a little later than the others but runs into the new year, so it’s a good choice for a trip between Christmas and Three Kings’ Day (6 January).
Hungerburg: the market with a view
20 November 2026 – 6 January 2027. Mon–Fri 13:00–19:00, Sat, Sun and holidays 12:00–19:00. Christmas Eve 12:00–15:00, New Year’s Eve 12:00–17:00, and from 25 December it closes an hour earlier (18:00).
This is Innsbruck’s highest market, up at the Hungerburg with a view over the whole city. To get there, take the Hungerburgbahn funicular, which starts at the Congress/Altstadt stop (Rennweg 3), right next to the old town. Go up in the afternoon light and come back down as the city lights come on. 🚡
Bergisel and St. Nikolaus: the quiet ones
- Imperial Christmas at Bergisel (13 November – 20 December): a calm market at the foot of the Bergisel ski jump. Fridays 14:00–20:00, Saturdays and Sundays 11:00–20:00, plus Monday 7 December 14:00–20:00 and Tuesday 8 December 11:00–20:00.
- St. Nikolaus (20 November – 23 December, daily 16:00–21:00): small and calm, across the river in the St. Nikolaus quarter. It’s a good last stop of the evening.
The seventh market, in Wilten, is a small neighborhood one. Its 2026 dates didn’t match across the official pages when I checked, so look at innsbruck.info before you go.
A one-day plan for the Innsbruck Christmas markets
This plan works best on a weekday or a Saturday in Advent:
- 11:00, Maria-Theresien-Straße (from 25 November): start on the main street with the mountains in view.
- Late morning, Old Town: walk to the Golden Roof and the market around it while it’s still calm.
- 13:00, up to the Hungerburg: ride the Hungerburgbahn from Congress/Altstadt. The market opens at 13:00 on weekdays (12:00 on weekends).
- Mid-afternoon, Marktplatz: back down for the carousel, the puppet theater and a Kinderpunsch (the alcohol-free hot punch for kids).
- 17:00, Golden Roof: the tower musicians play from the balcony.
- Evening, St. Nikolaus: cross the river for the small market, open until 21:00.
On a Friday, Saturday or Sunday you can swap in Bergisel for the Hungerburg.
Krampus runs in Innsbruck
On 3 and 4 December 2026, Krampus and Perchten runs take place at the Innsbruck Christmas markets, and St. Nikolaus arrives with small gifts for the kids. In Igls, just above the city, the run is on Sunday 29 November. They’re loud and spectacular, so with little ones I’d watch from the back. All the dates: Krampus runs in Austria 2026.
Getting to Innsbruck by train
- From Munich: direct trains run to Innsbruck. The Bayern-Ticket and Deutschland-Ticket don’t cover the trip inside Austria, so buy an ÖBB or DB through ticket.
- From Kufstein: regional trains run up the Inn valley to Innsbruck. If you come from Bavaria on a Bayern-Ticket, it’s valid as far as Kufstein, and you need an ÖBB ticket from there.
- From Salzburg or Vienna: ÖBB trains link all three cities.
From Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof, Maria-Theresien-Straße and the old town are a short walk.
Add a small-town market nearby
- Hall in Tirol (20 November – 24 December): a beautiful old town just east of Innsbruck. Mon–Fri 15:00–20:00, Saturday 11:00–20:00, Sunday 13:00–20:00.
- Seefeld (20 November – 6 January 2027, daily 14:00–21:00): log-cabin huts up on the plateau above Innsbruck, with a big Krampus run on 4 December.
- Rattenberg (20 November – 20 December, Friday to Sunday plus 8 December): a tiny medieval town lit by candles and torches in Advent.
My tips for Innsbruck in December
- Dress for the mountains. Innsbruck sits at the foot of the Nordkette, and evenings get cold fast. A hat and gloves make the evening so much more fun.
- Go on a weekday if you can. Weekends after dark are the most popular time.
- After Christmas, stick to Maria-Theresien-Straße and the Hungerburg, which run until 6 January.
- 8 December is a public holiday in Austria, so expect lots of visitors.
