Updated 2 November 2026. Dates, hours and prices are for the 2026/27 season and were checked with the organizers today.
Short answer: The Wolfgangsee Advent runs from Friday 20 November to Sunday 20 December 2026 in three lakeside villages: St. Gilgen, Strobl and St. Wolfgang. It’s open Wednesday to Sunday, plus Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 December, and closes at 19:30 every day. Entry is free, and Advent boats link all three villages.
Most Christmas markets in Austria are one square in one town. The Wolfgangsee Advent is different: it’s three separate markets in three villages around the same lake, and the fun part is moving between them by boat. It has been running since 2003, it’s an easy trip from Salzburg, and it’s a nice change if you’ve already done the big city markets. Here’s how the days and hours work, what each village does differently, the boat tickets, and how to get there without a car.
Wolfgangsee Advent 2026: dates and opening hours
The season runs 20 November to 20 December 2026. The catch is the days: the markets are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, with one exception. On Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 December all three villages open from 10:00 to 19:30.
| Day | St. Gilgen | St. Wolfgang and Strobl |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday | Small market on the lake promenade, 13:00–19:30 | 13:00–19:30 |
| Thursday and Friday | 11:00–19:30 | 11:00–19:30 |
| Saturday and Sunday | 10:00–19:30 | 10:00–19:30 |
| Mon 7 and Tue 8 Dec | 10:00–19:30 | 10:00–19:30 |
| Other Mondays and Tuesdays | Closed | Closed |
Entry to all three markets is free. If you only have one day, I’d skip Wednesday: St. Gilgen only has a small setup that day and everything opens late. A Thursday or Friday is the sweet spot if you want the full markets without the weekend crowds.
St. Gilgen, Strobl or St. Wolfgang: what each village does
Each village has its own theme, so they don’t feel like three copies of the same market. Here’s what the organizers say you’ll find in each one.
St. Gilgen: the painted Baroque market
St. Gilgen sits at the western end of the lake, so it’s the first stop if you come from Salzburg. Its look comes from artist Raja Schwahn-Reichmann, whose painted figures of people, angels and animals are styled after Baroque wall and ceiling paintings. A giant candle on the lakeshore marks the market from a distance, and more than 50 large candles light the village. On the church square you’ll see scenes from the St. Nicholas story. The Zwölferhorn cable car also leaves from St. Gilgen, about 11 minutes to the top, if you want a mountain view on the same day.
Strobl: the Nativity village
Strobl turns into a Nativity village. A path for the shepherds leads you to the big entrance gate, and down by the lake there’s a stable with life-size Nativity figures, a horse and carriage, and a pen with sheep, goats and other small animals that kids can pet. The market has about 30 stalls with real wooden shingle roofs. This is the one I’d point families with younger kids to first.
St. Wolfgang: the floating lantern and the big Nativity
St. Wolfgang is the best known of the three. Four-meter angels mark the entrance to the village center, and out on the water floats a 16-meter Peace Light lantern, the symbol of the whole Wolfgangsee Advent. The village has a Salzkammergut Nativity with more than 70 life-size figures spread through the streets, and the organizers say musicians walk through the market every day from 17:00. There’s also a large crafts exhibition with around 25 stands. The makers rotate during the season, so it changes from week to week.
Right next to the Schafberg railway station in St. Wolfgang there’s also a small indoor Advent market at the ErlebnisQuartier, open Friday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:30 between 20 November and 20 December. Handy if the weather turns ugly.
Getting between the villages: Advent boats and the 3-in-1 ticket
The boats are the reason to go. The WolfgangseeSchifffahrt runs Advent sailings between the three villages on the same days as the markets: Wednesday to Sunday from 20 November to 20 December, plus 7 and 8 December. After Christmas, the operator’s timetable lists daily sailings from 26 December 2026 to 3 January 2027.
For a full day, look at the “3 auf einen Streich” ticket. You get one boarding and one landing at each of the three piers (St. Gilgen, Strobl and St. Wolfgang). Single trips are also sold if you only want one leg.
| Ticket (Advent 2026) | Adult | Child (4–14) |
|---|---|---|
| 3-in-1 ticket (all three villages) | €31.00 | €9.20 |
| St. Gilgen ↔ St. Wolfgang, one way | €11.80 | €3.60 |
| St. Wolfgang ↔ Strobl, one way | €9.00 | €2.70 |
| St. Gilgen ↔ Strobl, one way | €15.50 | €4.60 |
A few things worth knowing before you board:
- Kids ride free on Advent Sundays. Children up to 14 travel free on the boats and the Schafberg railway when they’re with an adult.
- Check which pier you need in St. Wolfgang. On Wednesdays to Fridays the boats stop at both the “Markt” pier and the “Schafbergbahn” pier. On weekends and on 7 and 8 December they only use the Schafbergbahn pier.
- Saturdays get busy. The operator warns about longer waits at the piers, especially on Advent Saturdays, so build in some slack.
- Online tickets: the operator says boat tickets should be bookable online from mid-November. You can also buy them at the ticket windows.
- The KlimaTicket doesn’t cover it. The boats and the Schafberg railway count as tourist attractions, so you need a regular ticket even if you have a KlimaTicket.
Lantern cruises on Wednesdays
On four Wednesdays (25 November and 2, 9 and 16 December 2026) there are 45-minute lantern cruises with live folk music and someone reading Christmas stories and poems on board. They leave at 16:15 and 17:15 from the St. Wolfgang Markt pier and cost €21 for adults and €10.50 for kids. If you’re going midweek anyway, this is a nice way to see the floating lantern up close after dark.
The Advent train up the Schafberg
The SchafbergBahn cog railway runs a decorated, lit-up Advent train from St. Wolfgang to the Schafbergalm station at 1,364 meters. It runs Wednesday to Sunday from 20 November to 20 December, and daily from 26 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. Online tickets are released each Tuesday for the following days, depending on the weather.
On some Advent weekends there’s a program at the valley station or up at the Schafbergalm. Nikolaus and Krampus visit on 5 and 6 December, and the Christkind on 19 and 20 December. If you want the full Krampus experience, though, a proper Krampus run is a different thing; see our Krampus runs in Austria 2026 guide for dates.
There’s also a mountain-and-boat combo ticket, valid on two different days between 20 November 2026 and 6 January 2027. It’s only sold at the ticket windows of the boat company and the Schafberg railway, not online.
How to get to the Wolfgangsee Advent without a car
From our side of the border, the easy way in is through Salzburg. From Salzburg main station, take regional bus 150 toward Bad Ischl. It runs via Koppl, Hof and Fuschl and stops in St. Gilgen and Strobl. For St. Wolfgang, change in Strobl to bus 546. Coming from the other direction, you can take a regional train to Bad Ischl and pick up bus 150 there toward Salzburg.
One perk: if you’re staying overnight in the state of Salzburg or the Wolfgangsee region, the organizers say those bus routes are free for overnight guests. Ask your hotel how it works.
If you’re coming from Germany, our sister site has train tips for the Munich side in Christmas markets near Munich: day trips by train, and our Salzburg Christmas market 2026 guide covers the Salzburg end, including the Domplatz market you’ll pass on the way.
By car
From Salzburg, leave the A1 at Thalgau or Mondsee and follow the main road via Hof and Fuschl to the lake. From Vienna or Linz, leave the A1 at Regau and drive via Gmunden and Bad Ischl. The organizers say there’s plenty of parking in all three villages, but you’ll need a vignette for the Austrian motorway.
A simple one-day plan
If I were planning a single Thursday or Friday from Salzburg, I’d keep it simple:
- Morning bus 150 to St. Gilgen. Walk the painted market, and ride the Zwölferhorn if the sky is clear.
- Midday boat on the 3-in-1 ticket to Strobl for the Nativity village and the animals.
- Afternoon boat to St. Wolfgang. Stay until dark for the lantern on the lake and the musicians from 17:00.
- Bus 546 back to Strobl and bus 150 back to Salzburg. Check the last departures before you set out.
Look up the exact boat times in the operator’s Advent timetable for your day. The weekday and weekend timetables are different.
