Updated October 2026. Dates and hours are for the 2026/27 season.
Short answer: The Salzburg Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz runs from Thursday 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027. It’s open Mon–Thu 10:00–20:30, Fri 10:00–21:00, Sat 09:00–21:00 and Sundays 09:00–20:30, with shorter hours on 24–26 December and New Year’s Day. Entry is free.
Salzburg is the “big city” Christmas market we’d send a friend to first. From our side of the border it’s an easy trip, and the setting is breathtaking: the cathedral on one side, the fortress lit up on the hill above you, and choirs singing in the square. It also runs all the way to New Year’s Day, which most markets don’t. Here’s everything for 2026: the hours, the Christ Child and choir times, the two smaller markets at Hellbrunn and the fortress, and how to get there by train.

What’s on at the market in 2026
The organizer publishes a full program, and these are the pieces I’d plan around with kids:
- The Christ Child with four angels: Sundays 29 November and 6, 13 and 20 December, at 16:00 on Domplatz. On 6 December, Nikolaus welcomes the Christ Child first.
- Children’s readings with the Salzburg Christ Child: Wednesdays 2, 9, 16 and 23 December at 16:00 (25 November is a reading with an angel), at information stand no. 95 by the Christmas tree. Kids can write a letter to the Christ Child too.
- Choirs: more than 90 choirs sing at the market. On weekdays they’re at 17:00 (children’s choirs on Fridays at 14:00), and on Saturdays and Sundays at 15:00 and 17:00.
- Free sing-along: Tuesday 24 November and 1, 8, 15 and 22 December, 18:00–20:00.
- Tower music (Turmblasen): the traditional brass players perform on Residenzplatz at 18:30 on Thursdays 26 November and 3, 10 and 17 December, and on Saturdays 21 and 28 November and 5, 12 and 19 December. A junior ensemble plays on Domplatz on Wednesdays (25 November and 2, 9, 16 and 23 December) at 18:00.
- Advent wreath blessing: Saturday 28 November, 17:00, in the cathedral.
There’s also a ticketed concert series in the cathedral, Musica Coelestis (27 November and 5, 12 and 19 December at 16:00, about 45 minutes; adults €22, ages 14 to 18 €11, kids under 14 free).
Krampus and Perchten runs in Salzburg
- Krampus run: Saturday 5 December, expected around 19:00, with a big stage on Domplatz.
- Nikolo and the Kinderkrampus: Sunday 6 December at 15:30, a gentler walk through the market for kids.
- Perchten run: Monday 21 December at 19:00, on the first Rauhnacht.
The evening runs are loud and spectacular. With little ones, I’d start with the Sunday afternoon Kinderkrampus. More dates around Austria: Krampus runs in Austria 2026.
Hellbrunn Advent Magic
19 November – 24 December 2026. Tuesday to Friday 13:00–20:00, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays 10:00–20:00, Christmas Eve 10:00–14:00. Closed on Mondays, except Monday 21 December (13:00–20:00).
This one is on the south side of Salzburg, in the courtyard and park of Hellbrunn Palace. It’s a different feel from the old town: a bit more space, palace grounds and trees. Because it’s closed on most Mondays, it’s worth checking the day before you go.
Fortress Advent at Hohensalzburg
27 November – 20 December 2026, Advent weekends only (Friday to Sunday), plus 7 and 8 December, 11:00–19:00.
A small market in the courtyard of the fortress, high above the old town. Here’s a nice detail: if you walk up and mention the Advent market at the ticket desk, entry to the market is free. The funicular (FestungsBahn) costs extra. On a clear day the view over the rooftops is worth the climb.
How to get to the Salzburg Christmas market by train
From Munich: the BRB Meridian (RE 5) runs hourly from Munich via Rosenheim to Salzburg Hbf in just under two hours. The Bayern-Ticket is valid all the way to Salzburg Hbf: €34 for one adult in 2026, €10 for each extra adult (up to five people), and up to three kids aged 6 to 14 ride free with you. On weekdays it’s valid from 9 a.m. A Deutschland-Ticket also covers the regional trains into Salzburg Hbf.
From Salzburg Hbf to the market: it’s a decent walk or a short bus ride into the old town. Leave yourself time for the walk back, since the Meridian runs once an hour.
Inside Austria: ÖBB trains link Salzburg with Linz and Vienna to the east and Innsbruck to the west. The Bayern-Ticket doesn’t cover those.
A one-day Salzburg Christmas plan
- Late morning: arrive at Salzburg Hbf and walk into the old town.
- Midday: ride the funicular up to Hohensalzburg (on Fortress Advent days, see the market up there).
- Afternoon: Domplatz and Residenzplatz. On Sundays, the Christ Child arrives at 16:00.
- Early evening: choirs at 17:00, then tower music at 18:30 on Thursdays and Saturdays.
- Evening: one more Kinderpunsch (the alcohol-free hot punch for kids), and the train home.
If you have a second day, add Hellbrunn (not on Mondays) or the Wolfgangsee Advent villages (St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen and Strobl, 20 November to 20 December, Wednesday to Sunday).
My tips for Salzburg at Christmas
- Saturdays are the most popular days. A weekday afternoon is calmer, and the lights look their best after dark.
- 8 December is a public holiday in Austria, so it’s busy too.
- After Christmas is a great time: the market stays open until 1 January, which makes Salzburg a good pick for the quiet days between Christmas and New Year.
- Bring cash for the smaller stalls, and keep the mug deposit (Pfand) in mind.
